Portland Papers, Nottingham University.

P1 E12/1/6/44; memorandum of agreement 25. Feb. 1785. Between William Gould [on behalf of the Duke of Portland] and Joseph Boaler of Hardwick, Derbyshire to employ the latter as park keeper and gamekeeper at Welbeck; salary of £75 per annum; green coat, waistcoat and gold laced hat to be provided; house for his family; grass and hay for two horses; grass for a cow [for the summer season]; Boaler will provide suitable person qualified to kill game for use of the family at Welbeck, to whom the Duke will provide a coat, waistcoat and hat, and at his own expense keep 10 Pointers or Spaniels. To provide powder and shot etc.
